Cleaning up: Churchill supports local environmental initiative

June 27, 2018

Churchill has partnered with its client Coulby Newhams Parkway Shopping Centre on a sustainability initiative being rolled out to improve the public areas in the Centre’s local area of Hemlington, Middlesbrough.

Unfortunately, seeing litter scattered beside roadsides and in public spaces has become commonplace across the UK. Not only is this unsightly, it damages the natural ecosystem for local wildlife, flora and fauna.  To tackle this, local groups in Hemlington have come together – volunteering their time to litter pick. The scheme was instigated by the ‘Friends of Hemlington’ society, with support from local charity support group Cleveland Fire Support Network, the Parkway and the regional Churchill team. Churchill has provided all the kit, including litter pickers and protective gloves.

Every month all parties get together for an hour or so to scour the local areas for rubbish. The first event took place on 9th May and had a great turnout – perhaps aided by the promise of a hot drink and a slice of cake at the end, kindly provided by the Centre.

“It’s an honour to get involved with the Hemlington initiative, and fantastic to have a client that is being proactive in its local community. The team has been delighted to get stuck in, and we’re looking forward to seeing the fruits of all our labour as the local area begins to improve! This is another fantastic example of the North-East team leading the way to improved client partnerships based on a mutual vision. A huge well done to all involved” says Operations Manager, Phil Matis.

Churchill has provided security and cleaning services to the Centre since 2015. This partnership marks another string to Churchill’s bow in supporting its clients with their own sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Earlier this year, Churchill joined forces with Arriva on its ‘destination green’ programme.
