A recent press release from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) serves as a stark reminder on the importance of managing water systems and assets properly.
A care home company in Middlesex was fined after an elderly resident of a Surrey home died from scalding injuries. An investigation by the HSE found that the bathroom taps were not adjusted to limit the temperature of the water to a safe level for bathing and showering. Company policies and procedures in place were deficient and they failed to effectively communicate information and instruction to staff to ensure control measures could be implemented effectively.
Spencer Culley, Director of Churchill Environmental Services, comments on the incident: “This is an example of what can happen when you do not have the technical competence to manage your water systems and assets. A proficient water hygiene company would have ensured Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) were both installed and maintained so this death could have been prevented.”
