Tyne and Wear Metro featured in Britain’s 100 Best Railway Stations

December 8, 2017

“Britain’s 100 Best Railway Stations”, a book written by Simon Jenkins, has recently been published and we’re delighted to have two stations in the Tyne and Wear Metro network featured in the rankings.

Firstly, Jesmond Metro Station. Chosen for its modern design and stylish appearance, Audrey Devine and Susan Brewis oversee the cleaning on-site and take great pride in maintaining the station’s smart appearance on a daily basis.

Secondly, Tynemouth Metro Station. With its striking Victorian architecture, the station is a local landmark and a Grade II* listed building. Patrol staff, Gary McGlasson and Keith Simmons, visit three times a day to ensure that high performance standards are being met –  keeping the prestigious building in top shape.

A representative from Tyne and Wear Metro, said: “I know Metro staff and cleaning operatives did a great job making sure the station was well-presented when the publishers Penguin asked for photography in the spring. Please pass on my appreciation, it has all been worthwhile.”

Mark Whyte, operations director for Midlands and North, said: “It’s a great honour for all the staff to know that their workplace has been recognised nationally. Congratulations to all concerned!”

The book has received critical acclaim and made it onto The Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller list. Radio 2 presenter, Chris Evans, praises the book, “This is a cracker…a beautiful book.”

Perhaps one to add to our Christmas lists!
