Our work in sustainability and social value

As an employee-owned company, we are structured to support and improve the wellbeing of our employees. That includes supporting the future of our colleagues, as well as the future of the planet. In 2024, we developed and expanded multiple Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives to do exactly this.

Earlier this year, the Sustainable Facilities Management Index (SFMI) acknowledged our work by presenting Churchill Group with a gold award accreditation, as well as the Rising Star award for the second consecutive year for our social value schemes. These achievements highlight the success of the sustainability initiatives we worked towards in 2024.

Our ESG achievements in 2024

The SFMI

The SFMI is run by Acclaro Advisory and was created to assess FM providers across 23 criteria relating to ESG initiatives. 2024 was the third year Churchill Group was assessed by the scheme, and we are proud to announce that we progressed from our previous two silver awards and were presented with a gold award.

Beyond assessing individual organisations, the SFMI also benchmarks organisations against other FM companies, as well as providing guidance for their future in sustainable initiatives. Churchill Group is one of eleven partners with the organisation, helping to develop ESG strategies and benchmarks for all FM providers.

The Rising Star Award

In addition to our gold win, the SFMI presented Churchill Group with the Rising Star award for the second consecutive year, recognising our continued dedication to the social value initiatives embedded throughout the organisation. Churchill Group has developed a social value framework to support individuals who face employment barriers – including veterans, care experienced young people and refugees.

The SFMI has praised our initiative of integrating our ESG dashboard within the Social Value Portal and its ability to track real-time progress and deliver measurable social impact. This comes alongside our advanced emissions reporting, launched this year, which aims to not only demonstrate our commitment to transparency and accountability, but also to set a new standard within the industry.

We have also made steps to make ESG a core part of the work that we do by including ESG and social value into contracts, including client partnerships, to ensure that the projects we are contributing to are in-line with our long-term sustainability and social goals. We have also begun collaborating with clients to promote ESG values to drive benefit for all parties and positively influence the wider industry culture.

After becoming an employee-owned company in 2023, employee wellbeing remains front and centre of what we do. To continue building a company culture that supports everyone, we have integrated employee wellbeing initiatives and policies into our wider health and safety strategy, making it central to our day-today operations.

EcoVadis Bronze Medal

On top of our awards from the SFMI, Churchill Group was also presented with a Bronze Medal by EcoVadis in 2024. EcoVadis evaluates companies based on a set of sustainability criteria, including ethical, social, environmental and supply chain practices.

We are extremely proud that achieving this Bronze Medal puts Churchill Group in the top 35% of companies assessed. This not only demonstrates our commitment to and progress within these areas, but also our status as an up-and-coming leader in embedding these causes into our work.

Edie Awards

Churchill Group was honoured to be among those companies shortlisted for the Lloyds Bank Sustainable Business of the Year Award at the Edie Awards, highlighting our position at the forefront of sustainability in business, and our commitment ot ongoing sustainability initiatives.

RoSPA Gold Medal

We are proud to announce that Churchill Group was awarded the Gold Medal for the eighth consecutive year in 2024 by RoSPA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents).

The RoSPA Gold Medal recognises:

  • Our comprehensive health and safety systems and policies
  • Senior leadership’s active involvement in safety initiatives
  • Employee engagement and consultation
  • Our thorough accident investigation and remediation practices
  • Adherence to enforcement records

Social Recruitment Advocacy Group Gold Member Accreditation

We were given Gold Member status by SRAG this year, an accreditation that recognises our commitment to inclusive recruitment practices, which includes community partnerships, a dedication to training and career development, as well as recruitment for disadvantaged groups. Through this, Churchill has fostered a truly inclusive and diverse workplace that nurtures its employees and promotes social mobility.

What’s next

We’re delighted that our work is being acknowledged by specialists like the SFMI, RoSPA, EcoVadis and SRAG. Next year, we’ll aim to maintain our position as leaders in ESG initiatives and work even harder for both our employees and the communities we serve.
