Driving to net zero and our journey so far

At Churchill Group, sustainability isn’t a side project; it’s part of who we are. As a business committed to doing the right thing, our journey to net zero is already well underway, and we’re proud to be making real, measurable progress.

We’re not just about cleaning, maintaining, and managing spaces, we genuinely care about them. That means thinking about our impact and doing things better. Whether it’s switching to electric vehicles or plugging into renewable energy, we’re shaking things up to protect the planet because the future’s coming fast, and we’re already on the move.

Setting the ambition: net zero by 2040

In a world where environmental urgency is growing by the day, we’ve set ourselves a bold, but necessary, target: net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This ambition reflects our deep commitment to minimising our impact and futureproofing our business, our communities, and our planet. But ambition alone isn’t enough. It’s the action that counts, and that’s where we’ve been focusing our energy.

Electrifying our fleet

One of the most visible and impactful changes has been the transition of our vehicle fleet. In the 2023/24 financial year, we increased the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in our fleet by 34%, leading to a 15% reduction in fleet-related emissions.

This isn’t just about swapping diesel for electric. It’s a holistic rethink of how we move. We’re analysing journey data to right-size our fleet, support efficient routes, and ensure the EVs we choose are fit for purpose. It’s a journey of smarter, cleaner transport, benefiting the environment and our teams.

Renewable energy, real results

Each of our offices across the UK is now powered by 100% renewable electricity. By switching to green energy tariffs, we’ve significantly cut our reliance on fossil fuels and reinforced our commitment to cleaner operations from the ground up. This simple switch is one of many ways we’re reducing emissions across our estate, with more changes to come in lighting, heating, and energy efficiency.

Science-backed targets

In 2024, we received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an essential step on our net-zero roadmap. Our commitment?

  • Reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50.4% by 2032 (from our FY22 baseline)
  • Ensure that 95% of our suppliers by emissions adopt science-based targets by 2027

Science-backed goals help ensure we’re not just doing “less harm”, we’re actively working to align with the 1.5°C global warming limit.

Net zero journey powered by people

Sustainability is not just a technical challenge, it’s a people-powered one. From our procurement specialists guiding suppliers through decarbonisation, to our drivers embracing new tech and our site teams championing energy efficiency, we’re in this together. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we know the road ahead is just as important. Net zero is not a destination; it’s a continual commitment to doing better.

What’s next?

In 2025 and beyond, we’re doubling down on:

  • Scope 3 emissions engagement with suppliers
  • EV adoption and infrastructure
  • Biodiversity and ecology initiatives at our sites
  • New tools to measure, report, and improve our sustainability performance

We’re also undertaking a double materiality assessment, ensuring we prioritise the environmental and social factors that matter most to our business and stakeholders.

From electrifying our fleet to switching to 100% renewable electricity, we are delivering on our environmental commitments with purpose and momentum. We’ve set ambitious science-based targets, and we’re already making strong progress toward them.

Net zero isn’t just a goal on paper, it’s embedded in our operations, culture, and values. We’re reducing emissions, engaging our supply chain, and investing in innovation to build a more sustainable future.

As we move into 2025, our focus will remain on transparency, measurable results, and continuous improvement, because real sustainability is never finished, and progress is always possible.
