At Churchill Group, we believe safety isn’t a box to tick – it’s a culture to live by. And our Vision Zero programme proves that when safety becomes personal, performance follows.
Rather than focusing on lagging indicators or chasing compliance targets, Vision Zero is a philosophy of prevention, empowerment and shared responsibility. It’s embedded into our operations, championed by leadership, and supported by technology – and its success is evidenced by our Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Medal Award, earned for nine consecutive years.
What Vision Zero means at Churchill Group
Launched as a transformational framework, Vision Zero integrates safety, health, wellbeing, and environmental considerations into every layer of our business. It’s based on seven internationally recognised golden rules:
- Take leadership – demonstrate commitment
- Identify hazards – control risks
- Define targets – develop programmes
- Ensure a safe and healthy system – be well-organised
- Ensure safety and health in machines, equipment and workplaces
- Improve qualifications – develop competence
- Invest in people – motivate by participation
But more than a set of principles, Vision Zero is about embedding a mindset where every team member feels accountable and proud to keep themselves and others safe.
Building a behavioural safety culture
As James Bradley, our CEO, wrote in FMJ, “a behavioural approach where everyone takes personal responsibility for safety is the winning formula.” While policies and procedures lay the groundwork, real safety culture emerges when people internalise those expectations as part of their identity.
We’ve seen that psychological safety – the ability to speak up, raise concerns, and suggest improvements without fear – is a key enabler of behavioural safety. That’s why Vision Zero prioritises open communication, continuous feedback, and inclusive leadership.
RoSPA Gold Medal
We’re proud to have received the RoSPA Gold Medal Award, a recognition of our nine consecutive Golds. These awards are among the most respected health and safety accolades in the world, recognising organisations that demonstrate year-on-year excellence in protecting lives and wellbeing.
For Churchill Group, this isn’t just a plaque for the wall, but a sign that Vision Zero is strengthening our existing H&S duty. It reflects our teams’ daily commitment, the strength of our systems, and the effectiveness of our leadership.
Continuing the journey
Vision Zero is not a destination. It’s a continuous journey of improvement, reflection, and shared purpose. As we evolve our approach, we remain committed to:
- Empowering our people through training and participation
- Expanding the use of inclusive, accessible technology
- Strengthening partnerships with clients who share our vision
Because when everyone is equipped, encouraged, and engaged, we don’t just avoid harm – we create a safer, healthier future for all.
